#AVRinMA Update & Action Plan: 4.20.18
This is an update for activists working on passing MA H.4320, and those who want to jump into help do so. We seem pretty close! The Senate's on board, we've got 90+ Democratic House supporters, c. 25 GOP votes, and momentum from the other states that have recently passed AVR. Right now, the bill, which was favorably voted out of the Joint Committee on Elections on Feb 7, and endorsed by Secretary Galvin (a coup), has been referred to the Ways and Means Committee. No money needs to be allocated for AVR this year, so this seems pro forma, but we do have a cost study in the works.
The goal now is to eliminate undeclared, and more importantly, to get supporters (especially those in leadership positions) to ask Speaker DeLeo to bring H.4320 to the floor for a vote. We'll begin our push for this after the budget talks conclude at the end of this month.
Here's what we need from you now:
Call now and make another appointment to talk to your Rep, in person and in district, if possible -- for sometime AFTER May 1.
Sign up for our Zoom Call on Sunday April 29th at 7:30 p.m. This call will update you, help you prepare, and invite you to join in some collaborative brainstorming about creative tactics to make noise. Zoom's free and easy, and once you've downloaded, it's easier even than Skype.
If you know how to schedule Tweets, do so for May 1. Tweetdeck is a good program to use. Use hashtags ∫#AVRinMA, #mapoli, and tag @SpeakerDeLeo
We're on hiatus until the budget gets dealt with. In early May, we
will be starting up again with a flood of phone calls to ask legislators
to ask Speaker DeLeo to put this bill up for a vote. Meanwhile, the bill
is sitting in the Ways and Means Committee. If your legislator happens
to be on this committee, make a call and encourage them to ask
Jeffrey Sanchez to make this their first priority after the budget.

LET'S GET LOUD!
WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU, IN BRIEF:
(scroll down for details)
Call your Rep, using our scripts as a guide. And have a postcard party, using our postcards and messages! Write your Rep, the leadership, the Holdouts, and the Ways and Means Committee.
Let's make some noise!
First: GET THE INFO YOU NEED.
Call and tell the you're happy that Sec'y Galvin's endorsed AVR! And ask them to do what they can to help H.4320 get out of the Ways and Means, and up for a vote!
Working up to an ask this big takes some finesse, so there's a sample script below to use as a guide.
After you've had the conversation, amplify it by having a postcard party, and using our #AVRinMA and #mapoli hashtags, and tagging @SpeakerDeLeo. More HERE.
Say you're calling about H.4320, Automatic Voter Registration. Say: I've noticed you didn't co-sponsor AVR. Why is that? Listen to what they say, and repeat their concerns. Then ask: So what would you need, to be able to announce your support for this bill? Keep in mind, a lack of declared support doesn't mean opposition. it may be due to inattention, or confusion, or business. The sample script below will help you.
If you secure your Rep's support, let us know!
Next: HELP US CONNECT WITH FOLKS IN THESE DISTRICTS.
You know someone in or near one of these towns.
